Typing in address bar opens up firefox

I'm running a brand new computer with XP SP2 installed and I recently
installed the newest version of firefox on the machine. I had firefox
set as the default browser briefly and then changed it back for family
usage. Now when an address is typed in the nav bar of IE and visited
firefox pops up or makes a new tab with that link in. There was another
topic about this but i don't think it solved the problem and I didn't
really understand the solutions thrown up. i'd appreciate any help with
this issue. I will provide more infomation if i haven't been clear -
sorry i haven't posted here before. Thank you.

Open IE, Click Tools, internet option, click programs tab, make sure IE as
default browser is checked.
If that does not work go to the same location as above and ask it to reset
web settings.

Thank you for your suggestion but i have already done this - I have IE
set as my default browser and I've gone about it every way i can - It's
default and if something is clicked from an outside application it just
loads an empty window and loads it in firefox. I am quite computer
literate and have attempted most of the simple stuff, i'm just thinking
there must be something more complicated, however I'm a firefox man and
there must be somewhere in the registry (like in many of the posts
related to matters similiar to this have mentioned)??

Yeh i know it's strange, running both alongside with IE default has
never been a problem for me. I'm running 1.5.0.1 the most up-to-date
stable addition available, just what i downloaded as soon as i got the
new computer. I downloaded the IE7 beta but simply installed it, opened
it and saw it looked exactly the same as what FF had to offer and
uninstalled it by going to control panel and seleecting show updates
and just uninstalling it, I don't know if this has anything to do with
it..?

Hi :-)

It is possible that the installation and then uninstall of IE& Beta Preview
2 could be a cause of the problem. Go to Tools?Internet Options>Help>About
Internet Explorer and see what version it says you have listed there.

Also, have you tried to do a System Restore back to a date prior to your
installing the IE7 Beta P2?

As a Test, make sure that you have the FireFox install download saved to
your hard drive so that you can reinstall, then uninstall the FireFox and
see what happens with IE. If it does not help, then you can reinstall the
FF.

IF you are comfortable with working in the Registry, you might also try the
following. Be sure to backup your registry first:

What do you do if telling IE to check if it is the default browser doesn't
work? This requires modifying the registry. Only use this method if you
have already tried to set Internet Explorer as your default browser using
its option to do so.

Open the registry using regedit. In your registry, change:

/HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Microsoft/Internet
Explorer/Main/Check_Associations

to read "YES"

The next time you start Internet Explorer, it will ask if you would like to
make it the default. Answer Yes to that prompt and it should no retain
default browser status.

Hope this helps.

Jan, I think you were having this problem because you have a file type
association error.

Go to My Computer / tools / folder options

There click File Types. There look for extension (NONE) and File Types
"URL:HyperText Transfer Protocol"

Click on "Advanced" and then "Edit"

Edit the information on that window to match this values:

Action:
edit

Application to perform this action:
"C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe" -nohome

[X] Use DDE

DDE message:
"%1",,-1,0,,,,

Application:
IExplore

DDE App Nor Running:
(blank)

Topic:
WWW_OpenURL

---

This should solve your problem. If Windows does not let you edit this values
correctly the IE7 beta installation is a great workaround ;-)

Cristian
