Types Popup is a quality solution for users who wish to adjust Microsoft
Windows popup menus. These menus are summoned by right-clicking on your
desktop or on any file in Windows Explorer. You can remove unused items
and add your own. For example: you can add "HTML document" to "New" menu
if you are planning to make some Web-design.

This program enhances you with great abilities to adjust Windows
interface:
You can change default program for opening files or folders
Change popup menus for different file types
Add/Remove items from "New" popup menu
Add different templates to "New" menu.
Example: create a template for a letter in Word format from "New" menu
You can enable/disable options so that you can return any which you
removed earlier.

As a registered user you:

* Gain access to technical support and assistance.
* Get rid of trial version limitations.

The full version can be purchased for only $9.95(US).

Which are the limitations of the trial version?

It doesn't seem freeware.

From the web page, typos and all:

# Download
#
# TypesPopup: Download Pro version (892Kb)
#
# Types Popup Download freeware version(880b)

Guess you missed that, huh? Even though it was right above the part on
registration which you pasted.

The link to the freeware version doesn't work as written, though. It
should be <URL:http://yavsoft.com/downloads/tpfree.exe>, not
<URL:http://yavsoft.com/tpfree.exe>.

Didn't miss that. I wouldn't call it "freeware version" if in this page
http://yavsoft.com/isoft.html
they say
"Read more... Purchase ($9.95 (US)) Download free trial (912K)"

Free trial is not freeware. Huh?

Two different files. A free version, and a trial version.
Free trial is not freeware. Huh?

No, free trial is not freeware. But then the trial is not relevant
here; the free version is.

TypesPopup gives an error and exits on startup on my WinXP box. I have
emailed Yavsoft the details, as I really want this program.

What is it that you want? Be aware that it is possible that it is only
available in the buyware version, which has an additional tab for menu
configuration.

The closing ad in the 'freeware' version is horrid, and ones options
in it are limited to what you find in windows' file types settings,
and to some tweaking of the 'new' option on the right click menu; this
can be found elsewhere.

I think this app is being dishonestly marketed.

What is it that you want?

I want to *remove* a lot of stuff from my context menus. Every other
program seems to put something I rarely want or need in there, and do
not give me the option of removing it. Sifting through the registry to
get rid of the entries gets tiresome after a while.

Ideally, I'l like to edit the "Open with" submenu as well -- with no
system reinstalls for a couple of years, there's no end to the crap
piled up in there.

And I want good search abilites! By extension, description, what have
you. I really should not need to go through that huge list manually.

Eh. Sounds quite ... yucky, to be honest.

Hmm. Sure sounds so from your description. Oh well. I've seen a bunch
of context menu editors that didn't do the job before; I'm way past
getting disappointed.

Does PC Mag's 'ContextEdit' work with XP?

Have you tried File Type Manager 2? It seems to do all you want.

Yep; nice app, but Types Popup offers different stuff.

There was a (shareware) program called "Perfect Menu" that was just awesome.
I put almost anything you wish on the context menu. I think it's been
abandoned, because the last update was 2001. I think I'll ask the author to
go Freeware with it.

Ask him to go freeware with 1.51, rather than 2.0 which is too
resource hungry for my taste...
