Thanks a lot.

The 945G datasheet is here. What I'm specifically looking for,
is evidence it doesn't like high density memory.

http://www.intel.com/Assets/PDF/datasheet/307502.pdf

A problem uncovered several months ago, was the changing nature
of what some companies were selling for RAM. At one time, the
chips on a 1GB module, were cheaper per bit, than the chips on a
2GB module. That kept the 1GB module configuration from changing.
It would always have 16 chips, because the chips were cheaper.
( 16 * 64Mx8 )

But at some point, buying 8 chips double in size, became cheaper.
( 8 * 128Mx8 )

Such a single sided module, is the equivalent compatibility
question, to asking whether a computer supports 2GB modules.
If the available information indicates some question about
that, then you have to be much more careful when making a
RAM purchase now. If a company can guarantee they'll ship you
a 1GB module with 16 chips, then you'd be safe in such a
case.

In a particular case, Kingston actually refused to offer an
upgrade for a particular chipset, because Kingston no
longer were adhering to their datasheet for their memory
product. So they were selling 1GB DDR2 modules, where some
modules had 16 chips and some modules had 8 chips. To cut
down on the disappointed customers, they simply refused to
offer an upgrade for the "troublesome" computer.

If the companies would stick to "one physical design per
product SKU", this kind of thing would not happen. And
I wouldn't have to write all this crap...

OK, here is the 945G.

http://www.intel.com/Assets/PDF/datasheet/307502.pdf

This section on page 228, says it is "safe".

"1-Gb technology
128-M cells x8 data bits/cell
1-K columns
8 banks
16-K rows
Each component has a 1-KB page.
One DIMM has 8 components resulting in an 8-KB page.
The capacity of one rank is 1 GB."

So they're saying, a single side of the module can hold
eight chips, for a total memory of 1GB on that side.
Placing another 8 chips on the module, makes it a 2GB module.

Since the chipset supports a 2GB module, it can accept
any bastardized 1GB module you throw at it. You could
use a 1GB module with 16 chips (the old way), or a
1GB module with 8 chips (since that module is equiv. to
a 2GB module when checking for compatibility in this
instance).

*******

Now that our shopping cart is cleared for takeoff,
we can try Newegg, and shop for any old thing.

A-DATA 1GB 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 667 (PC2 5300) $15 (not in stock)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820211060

So that gives you some idea, how cheap a module you could find.
With no reviews available, we have no way of knowing whether any
expensive RMAs will be needed to get a working stick. All it
takes, is having to pay shipping back to the seller, to make
the deal more expensive overall.

The "best rated" module, with fewest complaints from customers,
is this Kingston module. Note there is one early module death, in the
first few reviews. You'll also notice in the reviews, that people
are asking about "density". So the issue I addressed above, is
becoming more known on the street. In particular, Kingston's
ability to make the modules precisely one way. A 16 chip 1GB
module is useful to more people, than an 8 chip one. But with
your chipset, this does not appear to be a problem.

Kingston 1GB 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 667 (PC2 5300) $23.49
http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductReview.aspx?Item=N82E16820134045

When I look at 100 reviews for that product, there is only
one failure I can see in a quick scan. And one case of
an "incompatibility". So I'd say that Kingston looks pretty
good. I have a couple Kingston kits here, that have been
good to me.

But that is $23.49, and just as much as your Crucial.

Have fun,
Paul

if you look at the above page you will see that the system has 4 Ram slots.
You will also see the warning that
you need to place equal RAM in "B' as you have in "A". You have 512 in each
of Dimm 1 and 3 so therefore you can
place 1gb of RAM in Dimm 2 so as not to lose dual channel mode...or you can
place 512 in each of 2 and 4 .

$23.00 is a pretty reasonable price but if you want to search more you need
to match the specs that you presently have
DDR2-533 DDR2 SDRAM (5.0-4-4-12 @ 266 MHz)
(4.0-4-4-12 @ 266 MHz) you
are running this one at present time
(3.0-3-3-9 @ 200 MHz)

Peter/Paul,

I appreciate the prompt and detailed replies from both of you.

http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/Document.jsp?lang=en....

if you look at the above page you will see that the system has 4 Ram slots.

This, I don't understand. What is "A" for my machine and what is "B".
If Dimm 1 and Dimm 3 are "A" for me, can I place 1GB each in Dimm2
and Dimm4 assuming Dimm 2 and Dimm 4 are "B" for me?
$23.00 is a pretty reasonable price but if you want to search more you need
to match the specs that you presently have
DDR2-533 DDR2 SDRAM (5.0-4-4-12 @ 266 MHz)
                                               (4.0-4-4-12 @ 266 MHz)  you
are running this one at present time
                                               (3.0-3-3-9 @ 200 MHz)

Yes, but I was worried more about the quality as I have not purchased
something from Crucial before. And, a tool downloaded
from Crucial scanned my system and recommended that RAM for me.

I vaguely know that 4.0-4-4-12 @ 266 MHz represents memory latency.
So, I need to search for something which matches 3.0-3-3-9 @ 200 MHz
as the other two (5.0-4-4-12 @ 266 MHz and 4.0-4-4-12 @ 266 MHz) are
being used? Sorry, I am a newbie in RAM so don't know much.

Thanks for your advice and time.

I went to Crucial(www.crucial.com) and for my HP - Compaq dc7600
Series Convertible Minitower Desktop/PC machine the suggested memory
upgrade was 1GB, 240-pin DIMM, DDR2 PC2-5300 memory module CT907869
costing about 23$. And, would my system be compatible with that RAM. I
guess it may, but I am a newbie in RAM so would appreciate any advice.
Can I find it for less price than that?
Can someone please clarify?
Thanks a lot.

This, I don't understand. What is "A" for my machine and what is "B".
If Dimm 1 and Dimm 3 are "A" for me, can I place 1GB each in Dimm2
and Dimm4 assuming Dimm 2 and Dimm 4 are "B" for me?

Dimm 1 and 3 are A Dimm 2 and 4 are B they need to be populated equally
for best performance
The Total amount of RAM in A should equal the total amount of RAM in B
AT present time you have total of 1 gig (2x512) in 1 and 3 so if you buy
another gig it goes into 2 and this gives you dual channel

Chipset Properties:
This is what your RAM is running at right now...this is what you should try
to match in timings

Check www.salescircular.com for local store offers, but beware that
they typically leave out Fry's (www.frys.com , if there are no stores
in your area). You don't absolutely need PC5300 but can use PC6400,
which is sometimes on sale for less.

If you have to buy memory by mail, get Crucial because it's about the
only retail DRAM sold in the US that's always made with chips branded
by the actual chip maker, as opposed to branded by the module maker
because such chips are never tested to as strict standards as the what
the actual chip makers require for their prime quality chips. And
don't think that heatsinks mean higher quality because they don't.

OTOH if you buy locally and can see the modules before purchase, look
for chips with part numbers or logos from Samsung (usually just
"SEC"), Micron (MT part number or just an "M" with an ellipse circling
it), Qimonda, Nanya, ProMOS, Power Chip, Hynix, Elpida, or Winbond.
I've seen those names on some modules from PNY, Centon, Kbyte, and
even Kingston, companies that normally use no-name chips with their
own brand or mystery brand markings printed on them.

Don't accept DDR2 desktop memory with a voltage rating higher than
1.8V because it means the memory failed testing at 1.8V (and rather
lax testing at that). All the chip manufacturers specify 1.8V nominal
for DDR2, except for special low voltage DDR2 rated for 1.5V.
