Does anyone know how I can open txt applications?
I can't, at this point.

What does "I can't" mean, exactly? Any error messages? If so, please
give the text. Without more information, no one can give you precise
troubleshooting steps. Normally Notepad is the default program for
opening .txt files. It is common for Notepad to be affected by various
viruses.

Please help us to help you. What do you mean by "txt
applications"? Do you mean text files (those with a .txt
extension)?

What does " I can't" mean? How are you trying to open them? What
happens when you try? If you get an error message, please quote
it verbatim.

For information on how to make a good newsgroup posting, read

I mean applications with txt. extensions. I get onto Notepad but then
nothing happens. I don't get any error
message. I just get stuck on notepad.

If you want to create a text file (a file that will have the .txt extension
after its name), start typing in the Notepad window and then use File>
Save.

If you want to open a *.txt FILE (application is not the right word to use
here), click on File> Open. Use the screen that appears to navigate to the
*.txt file that you want to open.

Mmm,
eitehr the .txt file size is 0 or check in whatever.txt file properties and
see if it's not locked (?!) - there's no reson it should be locked.
Make sure Wordwrap is selected in Notepad.
Else, try to create your own txt file in notepad and see if you can save and
open it.
Otherwise, use Wordpad or Word to open the .txt file.

Sorry to repeat myself, but *applications* don't have .txt
extensions. Text *files*, not applications, have .txt extensions.
You are presumably trying to open a text *file*. Notepad is the
application you're trying to open it with.

I get onto Notepad

How? Are you double-clicking on a.txt file?

but then
nothing happens.

What does "nothing happens" mean? Do you mean that Notepad opens
with a blank window?

Does this happen with all .txt files or just some? What .txt
files are these? Where did you get them? How big are they?

If you haven't tried with other .txt files, please do so, and let
us know what happens.

I created a test txt file in notepad and was able to open it.
What I can't open are the ones that come in the email, usually jokes, with
the txt extension. Are these files or applications?

Good. Then nothing is wrong at your end, and notepad works
properly.

jokes,

They should be files, not applications, but you need to be
extremely wary here. Many viruses are spead through E-mail
attachments, and they can sometimes masquerade as text files,
even though they aren't.

What are the names of the .txt files you've received? My
recommendation is that you do *not* open attachments you get via
E-mail. You often see advice not to open attachments from people
you don't know. I think that that's one of the most dangerous
pieces of advice you see around, because it implies that it's
safe to do the opposite--open attachments from friends and
relatives. But many viruses spread by sending themselves to
everyone in the infected party's address book, so attachments
received from friends are perhaps the *most* risky to open.

What E-mail program are you using, by the way?

Does anyone know how I can open txt applications?
I can't, at this point.

txt aplications? Do you mean exe aplications? or plain text files?

You can open plain text files using notepad or wordpad, exe
aplications are for running, and if you open then in notepad or
wordpad you wont be able to read them becasue they have been copiled
for running under windows.

I am using Outlook Express for email. I was using Eudora Light for years
until it suddenly went dead on me. Because I am not using the paid version,
I couldn' t get any help with it. Anyway, I'm used to OE now and like it.
Thanks for your advice. Maybe it is a good thing I can't get to download
those email messages.

BTW, am amateur who's elderly mother just had similar problem...

check settings : Outlook Express\Tools\Options\Security

Check-box = "do not allow to be saved or opened applications that may be a
virus."

If ticked, untick, then you should be able to access downloaded
attachements.

Remember : use up to date antivirus to scan all attachments before you open
them !
