Two XP PCs, ethernet hub, live dial-up connection, two patch cables...

Green lights on everything. Run network setup wizard on both (main one
first), while main one is signed on to ISP. Everything seems to go
smoothly. Set files for sharing on both.

No brainer, right? Well, they can't see each other, can't browse their
own LAN, don't even see themselves, and the client can't access the
internet.

I rechecked everything, rebooted everything, re-ran everything, called
Netware tech support for tech support, and was told that, since the hub
seems to be working OK, that their job was done and they didn't have to
help me any further.

Isn't that just ducky? In my mind, as long as the LAN is unusable I
can't be sure that the hub is working, but they don't see it that way.

So here I am, with two PCs that are connected properly with apparently
working hardware, and the networking wizard completes without complaint
or errors, but the LAN ~just plain ain't working~.

I would very much appreciate any insights any of you can offer. Email
replies are fine, but not needed.

Thanks,

Laura

Sorry, I meant NETGEAR tech support...

If each PC can ping the other then the hub is working.

For further help you need to specify whether you are using XP Home
or XP Pro, and which network protocols are in use. Too many well
meaning people make assumptions about others' setups and give
inappropriate advice.

I found when using network wizard that there was an error message, not
in its own dialog box that would smack you in the face, but tucked away
in the boilerplate of the main dialog.

You mentioned that you're using a hub to connect the two computers,
which indicates to me that your IP addresses are manually set (doesn't
sound like you're using a DHCP server anywhere), which the wizard should
have done for you. Speaking of the wizard, I'm guessing you're using
WinXP on both machines. Here's what to check.

Right-click on My Network Places. You should have Local Area Connection
listed. Right-click and go to Properties. Go to Internet Protocol
(TCP/IP) and click on Properties. Do you have an IP address listed
there? If so, what is it? Look on both machines and let me know, then
we'll proceed from there. Best of luck!

Thanks, but I just found out that AOL software is incompatible with ICS,
and it occurs to me that that is the cause of the problem. My pal has
earthlink as her ISP, but she installed AOL for a visiting friend on the
host computer, and it seems now that that was unwise.
