A friend's computer (Win XP - fairly new system from
DELL) had a problem with freezing up (about six months
ago) and called for help from DELL.

The help person had my friend reinstall Win XP (over the
phone, yet!) and now I notice that when booting up, there
are two choices for operating systems:

Windows XP Operating system
Windows XP Operating System

Only the top one works. Choosing the second option, the
system will not boot up. The messages are on the order of
some 'disk(s) not being present' or some such hooey.
Anyway, choosing the second option allows one to re-enter
the boot-up options again. Taking the first option works
fine.

How do I remove the bogus OS from the list so that the
boot-up will run faster and smoother?

thanks!!

Tony

Tony, go to the following:

Click Start, right click My Computer, select properties,
Click the advanced tab,
Under Startup and Recovery,
Click the Settings Button,
Under System Startup, click the Edit button,
Under [Operating Systems]
Delete the odd Windows XP Operating system line
It is usually the second line.

Then click File, Save, and File, Exit back to the Desktop,
Reboot.

I had the same problem which was corrected after using this advice. The only thing I can see having a problem with would be the deleting of the lines. You could instead choose your selected operating system from the drop down, select ok (which would select chosen as default)(ensure the correct o/s is shown as default) then change the option which says TIME TO DISPLAY LIST OF OPERATING OPTIONS to ZERO..this will then boot straight into your default operating system.

Thanks to Squire for the advice, this has been bugging me for months....

If you ever create a mirror image of XP, on any hard drive, the system will
re-create the dual boot menu.
So just delete it if not needed.
