two weird problems with IE6 and OE6

I have a Dell laptop running Win XP Home. When I open IE 6, the word "Links"
on the Links toolbar is grayed out, and the word "Address" on the address
bar is also blacked out. My Dell desktop running Win98 SE and IE6 and OE6
doesn't have this problem. The toolbars seem to be working ok. I never paid
attention before. Is this normal behavior for Win XP ?

One other thing, on the laptop, Outlook Express Stationery doesn't work
properly most of the time. You end up with missing graphics or tiled
backgrounds or tiled graphics. I'm sure the path to all of the files is
correct, just don't ask me to repeat it from memory!. Stationery on the dell
desktop works fine. I am updated on all the patches and updates on both
computers, except SP2 on the WINXP machine. I have automatic update turned
off.

Anyone have any ideas? Reinstall XP?

Now that I look at is closer, maybe the words are not grayed out, they have
just changed color; instead of black, they are light gray. Is there a
registry value for the color of "Links" and "Address" ? I have scanned with
AVG, run Hijack This, AD-Aware, and Spybot S&D. I have Spyware Blaster and
Spyware Guard. I can't find any trojans or malware. But I do remember now
that just before I noticed this, every link on the Links toolbar was wiped
out when I opened IE. I checked my Favorites Links folder and nothing was in
the folder. I didn't lose any other Favorites. Weird! I have added
everything back and everything is working ok except for this.

1. This is not a forum but a newsgroup, and by Gentlemen's Agreement we do
not post HijackThis logs here.

2. You're using an /extremely/ outdated version of HijackThis (v1.99.1 is
the most recent: http://forum.mvps.org/downloads/hijackthis.exe).

3. Please see the preliminaries most forums ask you to complete before you
post your HijackThis (HT) log: http://aumha.net/viewtopic.php?t=4075

4. After the preliminary scanning, you may post your log to any of the
following forums (there are more): http://forums.spywareinfo.com/,

Ok. But something I have noticed. If you bring up the address bar or the
links toolbar in Windows Explorer, the words are still a gray color, but if
you go to safe mode, Links and Address are the correct black color! I don't
think this is a IE problem, do you? It looks like a reinstall of XP is the
thing to do, unless I want to live with it! -robert-
