Hi,

I rebuilt my PC the other day, and upgraded to XP.
I installed WinXP and Office XP.

Then I installed Messenger 6.1.
Now, when my PC boots, it appears that I have two installations of
Messenger. First I get an old dialog box pop up saying I have been signed
out of Messenger, then I get a new dialog saying I have signed in.

I am assuming the old messenger is bundled in Outlook or Outlook express
somewhere but I cannot locate it to remove it..

Help!

Greetings SPG,

The "old Messenger" which is Windows Messenger comes with Windows XP -- there are actually
two versions of Messenger that can run on Windows XP -- Windows Messenger and MSN Messenger.

You can remove Windows Messenger, but if you do, you will be preventing
Remote Assistance, Whiteboard, Application Sharing and any other applications that utilize
Messenger from working (or loading without problems). You can just disable Windows Messenger
by opening it up, click Tools, Options, Preferences tab and unchecking 'Run this Program when
Windows starts' or 'Run Windows Messenger when Windows starts' (depending on version). As
well, you can disable it further by going to Start, Control Panel, Add or Remove Programs,
Add/Remove Windows Components on the left, uncheck Windows Messenger in the components list
and click Next >. Note: this is only available if you've installed Windows XP Service Pack
1 -- if you haven't, visit http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com. This won't remove Windows
Messenger, but it will let it stay out of your way.

Your problem with being "signed out at another location" is most likely due to Windows
Messenger being loaded and signing in (as above).

As well, Outlook and Outlook Express will *start* Windows Messenger as well. To stop this,
for Outlook (XP/2002), just open
Outlook, click the Tools menu, then Options,
then the Other tab, and uncheck 'Enable Instant Messaging in Microsoft Outlook'. For Outlook
Express, close Outlook Express, and run this .reg file:
