Two users viewing the same Inbox

My wife and I are the only two users on a computer
running Win XP Home edition. We use Outlook 2002 for our
email. New email is configured to be delivered
to "Personal Folders". When I am logged on and I open
Outlook, I see all email sent to us (we have one email
address for both of us). When she is logged on and she
opens Outlook, the Inbox is empty. Can we both access
the same Inbox so that whoever is logged on can view all
the email sent to us? On occasion, we are both logged on
at the same time. This is a standalone computer. In
addition, can it be configured so that we are the only
two able to access it? In other words, if a guest comes
and opens Outlook, they cannot see our email.

Thank you for your assistance.

You can try using IMAP instead of POP3 protocol
OR
You can change POP3 settings so that your mail reader does NOT delete
the mails when it downloads them. I also suggest to "leave mail on the
server" for 2 or 5 days. Depending on how many times you or your wife
check the mailbox.

You should consider 2 things:
1) using an ISP that supports IMAP in addition to POP. Imap is designed
to keep the messages (and folders) on the server. Makes allowing
multiple people accessing 1 inbox really nice.

2) Having seperate email addresses for you and your wife. I know, I
know, "you don't need it", etc. But every person I've known - without
expection - that has done this has been happier for it. After all, I
sure don't want to read all the junk my wife seems to like (and I'm sure
she would say the same for my email)

Boog,

it seems that both of you are using different PST files, but you can work
with the same PST file if you want to share the same items on one computer.

Have a look on the website of Sue Mosher:
http://www.slipstick.com/outlook/olshare1.htm (this is a site to support 2
users with different PST files, this is your nearly actual situation)

so you need only to change the standard PST of your wife, that your PST file
is also available as Standard PST file in her profile. On the website of Sue
you will get some information how to find your PST files.

[....]
In addition, can it be configured so that we are the only
two able to access it?

Protect the PST file with a password that only you and your wife will know.

Pascal, Chris and Oliver,

Thank you all for replying. I will call my ISP and
inquire about the IMAP option. I am currently using the
POP3 protocol.

Separate email addresses sounds great but I don't know
how practical the wife would consider it. It would
eliminate me seeing mail only she cares for and she
seeing mail only I care for. It is a very good option.

I went to Sue's web site. I learned a great deal there.
Excellent reference. Since this was something I could
implement now, I set up a new hidden folder in the shared
folders directory on the C drive, copied my .pst file
there, renamed and password protected it and changed the
delivery location of our email in my profile and her
profile to this new directory.

I logged on, opened Outlook and all my mail was there. I
switched users to my wife, opened Outlook and voila, all
the mail was there. Problem solved. I will still look
into these other options.

Thanks to all of you. Great job!
