Two scanners

I have just obtained a film scanner. I also have an ordinary flatbed
scanner. Will there be a conflict (either software or hardware) if both are
connected to the computer at the same time, or even when changing from one
to the other?

It depends on the type and brand of scanners, how they're connected
(for instance, USB, SCSI or parallel port) and possible driver conflicts.
I just had the same question yesterday, ran my USB film scanner (a
SmartScan 2700) and my flatbed scanner (an old Microtek E6 with
transparency adapter) at the same time, by which I mean that they were
both powered on at once. There were no conflicts until I tried running
the flatbed, but that may have been a software problem in the program
I was trying to use.

YMMV, so the best advice is to simply try it. It's highly unlikely
that you'll cause any damage.

I'm using an HP ScanJet 3500C flatbed and a Minolta Scan Dual III -
both USB and have experienced no problems at all. The remaining
system spec is 120Gb HDD, 1Gb RAM, 2.66MHz P4, and Win XP.

Is this pure luck?

I think the WinXP problem only occurs if you try to use the WinXP WIA
drivers. In most cases I've been successful if I installed the Twain
drivers which come with most scanners. I also find that the Twain drivers
are more likely to give full access to all of the scanner's features than
are the WIA drivers.

As the article mentioned the usbscan.sys driver is the problem. I would
imagine if the scanner doesn't use this driver there may not be any problem.

You will have a problem if you are running WinXP and both scanners are USB.

Yah couldda fooled me.
I'm running XP Pro and have a Nikon LS5000 ED and an HP 5470 which are
both USB and are both connected at present.
I do not get any of the warnings they say I will nor did I get any
when I set them up.

My wife came in and used the flat bed while the software and LS5000 ED
were up and running (but not scanning)

I didn't know there was a problem.

I just decided to run a test. Started HP Precision Scan AND hit
preview on the Nikon 4 ... Both scanned in previews at the same time.
(both were actually scanning at the same time) Still no conflicts.

Hardware manager shows multiple instances of USB drivers, but all show
"The device is operating normally with no conflicts"

Dunno - there have been mixed reports, but with little detail.

Are you connecting both scanners at the same time?
Both powered on?
Are they both either USB 1.1 or USB 2.0 (i.e., on the same USB card?)
Just curious...

Hello
Just to see what would happen, I am running both scanners
[LS50 Nikonscan standalone} and Epson 4870 [Photoshop twain].

Win XP pro. USB 2.0 I think. Only 512 ram, I am having trouble with the
other 512 module. Lots of disk activity but it works.

The progress bar is the Epson, with the Nikon below.

Please take a look at the thread 'USB Clash after installing Card Scanner'
elsewhere in this NG. It appears two USB devices are trying to use the
usbscan.sys driver, but the XP driver does not allow this. Luck? Perhaps.
More than likely it is the device manufacturer's reliance on the built-in
XP driver rather than developing their own drivers and on MS for not fixing
the XP driver.

I had to go to 1 gig of RAM to get rid of the page file swapping.

I'm running an MSI MB, 2.8 Gig Athlon XP plus, 1 Gig RAM and onboard
USB-2. Oh, and XP Pro.
