Two Questions

I have two questions.

The first is about a specific program. I "accidentally" found Windows
File Explorer - Beta. Even though it's a beta (I normally stay away
from beta programs) the author CLAIMS the program is stabile. Is the
program as the author says? I'd like to try it against 2xExplorer to
determine which is a better file manager.

The second question: Is this the correct newsgroup for freeware
quality questions? If "no," what would be? How about for pay programs?

Thank you,

A link would be helpful.

Yes.

Absolutely not.

Can't see how it would be better than 2XExplorer or FM98, but thanks
for the link.

Being an old school Macintosh dude, I'm not that hot about the explorer of
any replacements. In my opinion a highly overrated product. But then again,
you and I know: Every kitten wants his own ball of wool...

Power Desk 4 is free, and out there somewhere. :)

Hopefully finding and running those beautiful old 68k apps. They were a
pleasure, weren't they.

I've got both installed.
I haven't had any problems with WFE, but it doesn't seem to have the
"robustness" of 2xExplorer nor PowerDesk.

I haven't removed WFE simply because I haven't gotten around to it yet.
But it's not going to stay.

I bought PowerDesk 4. It was an OnTrack product that was included
in my purchase of System Suite. PowerDesk 4 includes modules from
Outside-In (Inso). After OnTrack was aquired, they sold off their
utility programs in order to concentrate on their core business:
data retrieval. OnTrack's utilities incorporated modules from
both other companies and themselves, integrated with their own
interfaces (which in the case of System Suite seem excellent).

Most (but not all) System Suite's modules were sold to V
Communications. I'm fairly sure that PowerDesk is now their
product. So, as you can see, the status of PowerDesk 4 is quite
murky to me. I'm not certain, but I don't believe that it is in
any way freeware or abandonware, especially since it does contain
functions that were/are the property of other companies.

Could you give me a link to FM98 please?

D/L link there did not work. Found on the LastFreeware site:
<http://www.321download.com/LastFreeware/page5.html>

Some other filemangers worth looking at:

PabloCommander <http://www.pablovandermeer.nl/commander.html>

A43 <http://www.shawneelink.net/~bgmiller/>

TurboNavigator <http://turbonavigator.us/>

Personally I have yet to find a freeware file manager that could
compete with, or which I like better than - the shareware
TotalCommander (formerly known as Windows Commander). Anyway,
IMHO anything is better than Exploder... well almost. Even
good old Windows File Manager - as we know it from Win3x.

Speaking of....you can get a LFN aware copy of WinFile.exe (aka File
manager) file version 4.0.1371.1 from WinNT 4.0 SP4,
D/L link in line 71, right column,on:

All the best,

Have you tried Windows XP? The Windows Explorer does everything the old FM
did, plus more. It's very flexible, and if you don't like certain behaviors,
they can be changed.

I see. w2k here. Didn't think they (XP/2K) was that different. Or
maybe we just have different perceptions of what "flexible" means in
this context. Anyway, if you like - no problem. Maybe I will too -
some day :)
