I started by making up a list of items. I typed in a line by using
dashes. Before I knew it the line of dashes had turned into a thin line,
without breaks, that went all the way to the right margin of the page. I
find the line to be impossible to delete. It apears to be beyond the end of
the document. Eg. it can be dragged to several spaces below all regular
text in the document. What is this line for. I've spent about an hour
looking through the Microsoft document "Word 2003 Inside-Out" by Mary
Milldhollon.. But without success. What am I looking at? How can I get
rid of it?

_|_ ______
Also I see a strange cursor that looks like: | __
only much smaller. What is this for? What does it mean?

The strange cursor is the "Click and type" cursor. This is a "feature" that
you can - and should - turn off. It causes bizarre direct formatting.

Tools => Options => Edit(tab)
This option is at the bottom of the dialog box.
