I have seen a number of posts of similar problems, and no one seems to
have answered it correcly.
An associate did the same thing (fresh install of OL2003 trying to use
a backup of a OL2000 PST file) and had multiple entries in the
'folders' showing the same 'Personal Folders'. He tried to right
click on the folders to remove them and got an error:
'The operation failed. An object could not be found.'
Wow. Great helpful message. Uninstall, reinstall to no avail.
BUT WAIT! Found a reference to this in KB 292022. But the problem
noted there was about OL2000 in IMO mode (he's running against an
Exchange server). The REAL problem here was fixed using the
description in KB 195718.
1) Stop Outlook
2) Open the 'Mail' control panel
3) Add a new profile, adding in any accounts you want, and adding the
PST file. Make that the 'default' profile.
4) Restart Outlook and your problem may be fixed (his was).
(Optional steps to cleanup
5) Stop Outlook
6) Open the 'Mail' control panel
7) Delete the corrupt profile entry
8) Copy the profile created in step '3' back to 'Outlook' profile
9) Make the new 'Outlook' profile the default
10) Delete the profile created in step '3'.
Enjoy your corrected Outlook installation.
Hope this helps
