Two Networked Computers Go Down Together

I have two computers networked with MS network features. One runs W2000 and
the other XP Pro. Recently, both have died simultaneously, and then booted
up to the start up screen. Any ideas about what caused that? As far as I can
tell, there were no outages in the house and out building where the two
reside. They are separated by 100' of ethernet cable.

On both machines? One, W2K, is not connected via a line to the internet. We
are loaning some electricity to a builder next to our property. They went
down again last night around 11 pm while I was using the W2K. It's possible
that a power surge next door caused it, but I seriously doubt anyone over
there is using power at that time.

So what does the event (system) log report - events and time?

Are both computers in separate builldings? Then they have separate
power sources? Do both buildings share the same electrical ground or
are votlages then varying between buildings? Even though each building
appliance sees a constant 120 volts, that voltage in one building can
vary to 140 volts (significantly greater for very short periods) from
other building's voltage perspective.

What kind of ethernet? Cat5 based?

Hadn't checked the time and log. It's been so long that I've played with
them, I completely forgot about them. The last outage happened around 11 pm
Friday, so there's a chance I can find the entry. I'll see what I can do
later tonight.

The out building shares power with the house. Not sure about the ethernet.
It's a common one and I've had it in place for about 4-5 years. Nothing
fancy. Is there a way to tell?

Yes, one in the house and the other in a building 100' away. The ethernet is
underground between the two buildings. 3' or so.
