Two messenger icons in task tray

I am running WinXP and upgraded Windows Messenger
4.7.0106 to 5.0.0381. I end up with two icons in the
task try. If I open either of them and do Help/About,
they both say that it is running version 5.x. However, I
signed into one and a mousover of one shows "signed in"
and the other shows "not signed in".

How do I get rid of the second icon? Will following the
directions elsewere on the list to remove 4.7 do the
trick (without messing up 5.0) or is there a different
fix for this situation?

I will be rolling this upgrade to users on the network.
How can I prevent this from happening on the other
workstations? Must 4.7 be removed before "upgrading" to
5.0?

Greetings Jeff,

Very unusual (not quite sure how this happened as the Windows Messenger 5 installer should
write overtop of the Messenger 4.7 executable in the \Program Files\Messenger folder) -- did
you happen to change the location of your Program Files folder recently?

I'd be interested (because I'm clueless how you managed to do this), if you do a search on
your drive for 'msmsgs' (just click Start, Search and do it there) to see exactly where it
put the two Windows Messenger executables.

However, as a solution, close both Messenger clients, then click Start, then Run, and type
the following:
msiexec.exe /x {ABEB838C-A1A7-4C5D-B7E1-8B4314B10138}
and click OK.

Then click Start, then Run, and type the following:
RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\INF\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove
and then click OK.

Then reinstall Windows Messenger 5:

It is only in one location: C:\Program Files\Messenger

I've never messed with the location of the the Program
Files folder.

I'm just glad that I'm not the only one who's confused by

Hi Jeff,

Very weird -- assuming you haven't tried my "fixes" yet, go into the 'Messenger' folder,
right-click msmsgs, click Properties, then the Version tab -- see what it reports the version
as. I'm betting it's 5.0.0.381 (Windows Messenger 5).

I'm not quite sure how 4.7 has remained in memory, have you rebooted yet? It may just "go
away" (considering it isn't anywhere [at least out of the system folders]).

Update:

First command ran.

Second command said that 4.7 wasn't installed.

I restarted and ran the Messenger 5.0 install.

I loaded Outlook, and two icons appeared.

Just for giggles, I tried running your first command
twice in a row. The second time it said that the action
is only valid for programs already installed.

However, no Messenger in the tray.

Since this doesn't seem to be a common occurance, I've
been trying to think what could have made this a unique
case.

The only thing I can think of is that I aborted an
install of 5.0 due to an interuption (it had loaded files
into the temporary folder then was at a Next/Cancel
prompt). Then, later, I did a full install.

Is there something that didn't gracefully back out when I
did the aborted install?

Hi Jeff,

I'm not quite sure, in fact I'm not quite sure why you're getting two icons in the
notification area (system tray), when just Windows Messenger 5.0's executable is there.

If you click Start, then Run, type "cmd" and click OK. Then at the prompt, type:
cd\
(and enter) to get back to the root directory and type the following:
dir/s /a /p msmsgs.exe
(and enter). This will scan the entire drive for msmsgs.exe entries (even if they're
"hidden").

All that should [normally] be found is msmsgs.exe in the \Program Files\Messenger folder and
assuming you've installed Service Pack 1, the \Windows\ServicePackFiles\i386 folder.

Well, after doing all of the fixes yesterday (twice), I
saw your messege this morning and decided, what the heck,
and rebooted again.

The extra icon is gone. I'm not sure which of your bits
of advice actually fixed the problem but it's gone now.

Thank you for your help.

Hi Jeff,

I have to admit that's the oddest issue I've seen in awhile, but glad to hear it =).
