I updated to windows live messenger 8.1 because I had to? Now every time my
computer starts up two of them show on the task bar and both are the same?
Just one is showing in msconfig. When you exit from one of the the other
stay's.
What do I need to do to stop one of them? Or should I just uninstall and try
again?

Greetings Duke,

Are you sure they're both Windows Live Messenger 8.1? Open them both up, press the Alt key
to bring up the menubar, choose the Help menu and then choose About.

I'm betting one is Windows Messenger and one is Windows Live Messenger, which are separate
products.

You can remove it, but Remote Assistance, Whiteboard and
Application Sharing will no longer work within Windows Live Messenger. If that's okay with
you, simply uninstall by clicking the Start button, then click Run and type in
(copy-paste if you like):
RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\INF\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove
Then click OK.
Messenger will then be uninstalled. For more detailed instructions and screenshots on this,

-- Windows messenger has been off this computer for a while. Both of these
are 8.1. I can log into both with any of my other user names and have both
running. Some people might like that opp but I have no need for but one per
computer. Thats why I looked in my start up to see if there were two but only
saw one? Unless I over looked something or looking in the wrong place there?
I have not looked in the registry yet.I know how to get into about any thing
on my computers and correct or delete if need be. I might have to uninstall
it and then reinstall to correct but that does not answer the why or a
quicker fix to it for your records and any one else that might have the same
problem and don't know who to ask.

Hi Duke,

By design, Windows Live Messenger can only execute twice. If it's starting multiple times
than you're using something third-party (knowingly or not) to bypass Messenger's
functionality stopping you from doing exactly this.

As such, if someone else executes Messenger, it will simply start again and again and again.

If you have say, Messenger Plus Live installed, there's an option within it which allows you
to do this. To turn it up, just pop up one of the Messenger clients, press the Alt key on
the keyboard to bring up the menubar, then choose the Plus! menu, then Preferences, then
Messenger tab and uncheck the 'Allow me to connect to several accounts simultaneously'
option.
