I have a desktop that is hooked up to my work LAN. We also have a wireless
LAN at my office. If I plug in a wireless USB adapter to use on the public
wireless network and disable the LAN will that change my IP address?
I would like to be able to check my email at work.
Thanks in advance

The IP address you get from your public wireless USB will be different
from your office LAN IP address. When reconnecting to your office LAN,
you will more than likely retain the same LAN IP address that you had
before you disconnected it. (If your office LAN uses DHCP, it is not
guaranteed, but DHCP has a strong preference to maintain the same IP
address when possible).

In addition to John's reply - if you connect to the *public* wireless
network (which one presumes is provided for guest use only), you may not be
able to connect to your office LAN (which should be protected from guest
access). This is something you need to discuss with the people responsible
for administering your IT environment at work.
