Hello all.

My wife has a laptop and I have a desktop computer, but we only have one printer, and is linked to the desktop. Is it possible to connect both computers to use the same printer? I did it with my Amiga computers via a switch box,is it the same with P.Cs? If so how do I go About.
Many thanks for any replies.

In my opinion the wisest way to accomplish what you need is to purchase a wireless router and network your computers.

That way not only can you print to the computer from both machines but you can also easily share files and any laptop I've seen lately comes with some form of wireless adapter already built into it.

I have my laptop set up that way and can wander around anywhere in the house or yard and print to the printer connected to my desktop in the office.

Or you could go for a 4 port router . Easy peasy to set up and it will give you extra security for the internet . The one I bought from flo[ps is redundant to my needs now . You can have it cheap if your interested .

Hello Spezi.
Many thanks for your reply.
I have a wireless router. It came with my AOL package. Both our computers are linked to it.We tried the other night to network our machines but had no luck.We just kept going around in a circle not getting very far. So in the end we gave up.
All the best

Hello Abarbarian.
Thanks for your reply.
I have a wireless router,it`s by NETGEAR.Came with my AOL package, and,if I read it right,it has 4 ports.Only one is used at the moment. As I`ve said elsewhere,my wifes` laptop uses it. We tried last night to set up a network to get the two computers to talk to each other, but we just went around and around in a circle getting no where. So just how does one set up a network is seemed very complicated to us?
All the best

What operating system(s) are you using on the desktop and the laptop?

The laptop must have a wireless LAN card.

Is the Broadband Modem plugged into the router?

Does your desktop PC have a wireless LAN card or facility?

If it does and it's listed in your device manager (I'm assuming MS Windows in use here) then it should just be a case of running through the network setup wizard in the control panel.

Some more details on your setup with regard to what I've asked above would help.

Hello Floppybootstomp.

The O.S. we are using is Windows XP.
I`m using version1 while my wife has version2.
The modem is quoted as: "54mbps wireless modem router" Maker is NETGEAR. The computer (desktop) is plugged into the back together with the phone line. It has 3 other outlets.
The desktop has an "intergrated 10/100 ethernet LAN"
I don`t know what the laptop specs are except the O.S is windows XP2.
We tried the setup wizard last night but got no where, just round and around in circles.
Hope it`s some help.
