Two Computers one Modem

Hi
I recently purchased a new laptop and I thought, for the time being, I could
just swap the J45 cable between my desktop and laptop. Well that does not
work because when I switch from one to the other I lose my IP address
(windup with 69. something or other) and I have to disable the modem and
computer for about an hour before the ISP assignes a new IP address and I.m
hooked up to the internet again. By the way both the manufaturer of the
labtop and the ISP thought the swaping would work. Any ideas where I can get
infromation on the preferred way to network or combine the two computers?
Thanks for your help.

Just get a router
either or both computer can be on-line

BTW: you should be able to swap cables...
but the computer should be rebooted

If you are using an RJ 45 cable then you have a high speed modem as dialup
modems use RJ 11 cable. So just purchase a router. They are fairly
inexpensive and will easily allow you to network your two systems plus give
you some added protection. You simply plug the modem into the router's WAN
port and it will act as a splitter. You then connect the PC to one of the
routers ports and the laptop to another. That should about do it.

My local Staples outlet had a stack of D-Link routers on sale for
$29CDN last weekend.

I got a DL-524 Wireless G router there for $39 a month or so ago. My
old Microsoft router was starting to fail.
