Both my desktop and notebook computers are running winxp home edition. I got
my notebook for xmas, I just noticed that both computers have the same
registration number.

Why is this?

There is no registration number. What number are you talking about? Where do
you see it? On the computers or on a label?

I clicked on my computer/properties, where it says in the general
information. Registered to: Your Name and the number below it.
I checked my desktop and noticed both are the same number.

What I'm saying is, windows never prompt me to activate windowsxp, when I
tried to do so I was prompt that it was already activated.

The product keys for the computers are different

Greetings --

Is the Product ID XXXXX-640-0000356-23XXX or
XXXXX-640-2001765-23XXX?

If so, you've got pirated software on both systems.

Not possible I personally bought my winxp at compusa a year ar so ago. My
notebook my wife got me for christmas 2003. The product id's are different
on each mechine and look nothing like what you have posted.

I don't understand, Terry. On your first post you said the "registration "
numbers were the same. After my post you said you were talking about the
numbers listed below the name at Registered To: , and said that those
numbers were the same. Those numbers are the Product IDs. I think we may be
confusing two different numbers. There is the Product Key, a 25 digit
alphanumeric number comprised of five groups of five digits. This is the key
you use to activate XP, and is usually on a sticker on the case if XP came
preinstalled; and on a orange sticker inside the folder that retail XP comes
in. The Product ID is generated when you install XP, it is shown under the
Registered To: name. The Product ID format is as Bruce stated, four groups
of numbers such as 12345-123-1234567-12345.
