Two Cips going simultaniously?

I've noticed in the past that people were able to do special...I guess you
could call them effects, beyond the normal greyscale or old movie that you
normally see.
For instance they could have a line separating two different movie clips
going at the same time, or have the two movie clips on top of each other,
with one of them transparent almost...I don't know how to explain it exactly,
but as I move on in movie making, I was wondering if anyone knew how to
accomplish these things in WMM (if you know what I'm talking about.) I know
they're possible, its just a matter of figuring out how/where I can go in WMM
to do them.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
