Is there a down side to running two anti-virus applications at the same
time?
Currently I run AVG 7.0, and I was pleased with it until recent problems.
Thanks

You mean other than a big redundant waste of resources, the possibility of
major compatibility problems or system freezes when they both try to do the
same thing at the same time? No, of course not.

Then you balance that against the advantages of using two anti-virus apps at
once, which are, umm ...

But then, you did ask about virus protection in a video card newsgroup.
That's kind of like asking about condoms at a Star Trek convention. You
might get an answer, but it will hardly qualify as an expert opinion ;>)

Besides the fact they may start quibbling over who gets to scan your
email? I dont see how.

I personally run a heuristics virus scanner (which looks for viral-like
code) and a signature-based (which looks for viruses matching mugshots,
not derivates)

That way if a MyDoom.?? comes out before I've downloaded the new
'signature' files from Trend Micro, the heuristics nail it.

Of course, not using Outlook Express is the first move I would make if I
were you.

Grab thunderbird (good email client) it will stop you from getting
screwed over by your mail client running what it shouldnt.

Oh yeah, and the browser, FireFox is cool too :)

What is the consensus of www.free-av.com on here?

you can install 2 different AV, as a matter of fact its recommended,.
BUT you can only have one montor running at any given time.
or you can just use 1 of these 2, which are the best.
www.kaspersky.com I prefer the service and pricing at the swiss site,
www.avp.ch
or nod32 also available at the swiss kaspersky site

stick with bloatware and crappy service etc if you like norton, symantec
or mcaffee

Use 3.10, that's a more compatible anti-virus set than 4.1 or 4.2. And it
fixed the CoD problems too.

I agree, Thunderbird is Nice.... Had some comments from other that it
is fast when fired up !!! They licked it too.

Also Firefox is nice... could do with opening links etc in new TAB not
new window... but that is ok.

Only prob with Thunderbird is AVG does NOT work with it..... But if
you save the attachements to disk then scan it... you should be good.
Also if you try to open an Attachement the AVG will pick it up......

Every Firefox user should have the Tabbrowser Extension
installed. It gives you the ability to force Firefox to
*only* use one window at any given time, as well as have
links from other programs open in the background (as
opposed to bringing the browser to the foreground).

http://white.sakura.ne.jp/~piro/xul/_tabextensions.html.en

If you have a mouse with a mousewheel that doubles as a 3rd
button you don't need to install a fix. Just click the link with
the mousewheel button & it'll open in a tab.

Of course if you want the background functionality then you
will.

True, but there are many types of links out there can defeat this,
including those that specify "Open in new window" and many javascript
links. This extension handles everything, and you will *never* have
more than one Firefox window open, if that's what you want. Plus you
get a few more useful functions with it.

Cheers,
cK

Yes, I agree completely with that.

I've yet to come across the open in new window only thing, but
the javascript could be handy. Mind you I tend to use Mozilla
rather than Firefox as my main browser.
