Fortunately it was the second DC, the one that didn't have any FSMO roles on
it. HDD failure.

So far the only problem is that both DCs were GCs too. Outlook on the
Terminal Server says it can't find the Exchange server. Click Retry and it
finds it after 30 seconds.

Anyway the plan is to put a new server in there.

Should we build a new w2003 server with a different name and DCPROMO it, or
should we use the same name as the dead one?

Any other tips?

Thanks, Neal

first cleanup data in AD
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=216498

If such remains remove also data in DNS which points to this failed
server and computer account. Then you can set up new server with the new
or old name, add this to the domain and promote as a DC
