tweakUI, v 2.10.0.0 -- problem with cpl

WinXP Pro, upgraded from WinME. PIII-1000, 640 meg RAM......

At bootup, Rundll keeps asking for tweakui.cpl.

I was using TweakUI 1.33 with WinME. I removed it very soon *after* the
upgrade to XP (and never used v 1.33 with XP). I then installed TweakUI v.
2.1.0.0. But no CPL file was unpacked or installed in that process -- so no
Control Panel applet/link resulted. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling
several times, but no luck.

I have searched my system, and there does not appear to be a "tweakUI.cpl"
anywhere in the system. I have looked through the registry (though I have
little expertise with that) -- and there seems to be no reference to that
CPL anywhere.

TweakUI v. 2.1 resides in the C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32 directory --- I placed a
shortcut on my desktop, and TweakUI chugs along just fine when I call it
with the shortcut.

I did a newsgroup search
http://groups.google.com/groups?hl=...-8&selm=eYo2TMK7BHA.1824%40tkmsftngp05&rnum=2

According to the last post in that thread, v 2.1.0.0 does not install a
control panel applet. If that is so, it is OK by me -- but if so, why does
Rundll keep asking about it at bootup?

TIA

Get the good tweakui (1.33) here
http://www.microsoft.com/NTWorkstation/downloads/PowerToys/Networking/NTTweakUI.asp

All tweakui work on XP. If you want to edit add/remove programs you need ver 1.
http://www.microsoft.com/Windows95/downloads/contents/WUToys/W95PwrToysSet/Default.asp

XP's tweakui is a program (exe not cpl).

Any one cpl can be installed at a time, and unlimited exe (of which there is RTM and SP1 versions)

All versions of tweakui do something that the other versions don't.

I have 95 (1) and ME/2000 (1.33) that I install as needed (only one can be installed at a time) and Ver 2.

David,

Thanks for the info and the explanation of the difference between v1.33
(cpl) and v2.1 (exe). I will hold on to v1.33 and play with 2.1 for a
while.

Another Q -- Any idea where rundll gets the info that tells it it should be
looking for a tweakui cpl? None of the tabs of information in Msconfig seem
to offer a clue to me.

TIA, again

A cpl is a dll file that supports some specific named functions.

Kelly's first-line registry tweak is "add XP tweakUI to the control
panel".
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

(I have TweakUI for XP and TweakUI appears in my control panel. There
is no tweakui.cpl on my system, which came new with XP.)

Albert,

The entry that is trying to load TweakUI 1.33 is in the Registry. Click
Start, Run and enter REGEDIT Go to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

Look in the right pane for a value called Tweak UI. Right click it and
select Delete.

See www.dougknox.com, Win XP Tips, Remove TweakUI 1.33 Manually.

Doug,

Excellent. You nailed it. Now we boot without even a sigh from Rundll.
Thank you.
