As a lightweight in terms of computer experience, I thought others like
myself might appreciate this warning : tweakui is currently (Oct. '06)
being HEAVILY endorsed by PC World (Nov. '06 issue).
PC World also endorsed tweakui about two or 3 years ago, at which time
I downloaded it. I experienced serious problems. My advice: NEVER,
EVER download tweakui!

I have downloaded and used it without any problems on both my home and
office computers.

My boss has it on 3 of his computers. No problems.

6 of my friends and co-workers have it on their home and office computers.
No problems.

What did you do? Make too many changes all at one time and screw up your
computer?

My advice is that you not make too many changes at one time, although
from what you say, it's probably too late.

I don't remember if they had tweakui for Win95, but I ran it with Win98
and now with XP Pro. I've been using it for 6 or 7 years now...

I've used it since Windows 95 and have never had a problem with it. Has
never caused a problem
on my system.

Of course, if you don't know what you are changing and just arbitrarily play
around in it, it can do some danger.

If would be best if you mentioned what you did and what happened, before
advising people not to use something.

My advice is exactly the opposite. I've used all versions of TweakUI over
the years on all of my own machines and installed it those of many others.
I've never had a single problem with it anywhere.

In fact my advice is that *everyone* should have a copy of TweakUI and use
it wherever possible instead of doing the same thing by a direct registry
edit.

TweakUI is essentially little more than a user-friendly, less dangerous
special-purpose Registry editor, and there's no downside of using it. No
matter how experienced you are editing the registry manually, everybody is
always at some risk of making a mistake, and anything you can do with
TweakUI instead of Regedit is far safer.

What are the "serious problems" you experienced?

The only thing dangerous about TweakUI is a malfunctioning chair to keyboard
interface.

I will continue to recommend the Microsoft Powertoy TweakUI to users wanting
to learn more about their system/tweak the performance of it easily. It is
a fantastic software I install on every system I install/touch/maintain. I
have yet to have any issues with any of its features going all the way back
to its Windows '9x days.

If you are reading this, you can and should get this freebie. When
utilizing it - be sure to take things slow... Don't go in and change
everything at once. You are learning here - do it the same way you learn
everything else. The fewer changes you do in any one session, the easier it
will be to reverse it if you decide you don't like the change!

Good Advice.

Further, the OP won't say what he did with it -- which is non-responsive and
fraudulent.

I do wonder where the OP went - or if other posters are correct and this is
a case of a "drive-by trolling"... ;-)

Yes, it well may be just that -- by a juvenile.

Actual, he/she provided a service for the group; those of us who use
TweakUi got a chance to mention it and the neat things you can do with
it. Like everyone has said, though, TAKE IT EASY! Make a change or maybe
two (jot yourself a note as to what you changed, and what it was before
you changed it) and see if you like it. If you don't like what it does,
change it back to the way it was.

Or, maybe the OP doesn't LIVE here like some people, so they don't check and post every five seconds.

I have to admit that i've never had any problems with tweakUI.

You are absolutely correct TweakUI is a good tool for modifying your
computers setup

Bingo!
I entirely agree.

I've been using TweakUI safely for years.

Same here. All TweakUI is, is a convenient registry editor for a bunch of
presets.

Is this gonna turn into one of those "gotta protect an idiot from himself"
threads?
