TWAIN not slow anymore

Last week, I wrote, in part:
i900 or an Epson 2400 scanner, the import function using the TWAIN
driver is really slow, as in at least 3 minutes to when the scanner
TWAIN software comes up in PSP, and even longer in PS. I have
reinstalled both PS and PSP, and reinstalled the TWAIN software for
both scanners. Any guesses as to the cause? I've run diagnostics on all
the hardware, including memory. <<

And Carl McMillan replied, in part:
long it takes to load the TWAIN. <<

Taking Carl's reply to heart, I tried getting the Epson Smart Panel to
load. No luck; it would hang on each of the separate modes. Using the
Epson Copier mode, I got a status showing that the scanner "can't
initialize".

I thought I'd pass along what I found. Apparently, one of the Windows
updates (automatically downloaded also last week) did something to
scramble Windows' interface with the Epson TWAIN driver, because on
Friday 4/15, on Epson's web site, there appeared a new TWAIN driver and
new Epson scan utility. I installed it and all is right with the world,
including a new interface for the Epson TWAIN driver.

As to losing the Epson Smart Panel (especially the copier mode), I can
live without it. Anyway, I figured out a way to use Vuescan to scan to
printer. Works great as a simple copier function.

Using WinXP Home, Epson Perfection 2400 Photo, Microtek i900, Minolta
DiMage Scan Dual IV.

This is one of the flaws with Automatic Windows Update.

I believe that the Microslurp software can sometimes incorrectly
indentify your setup and load an inappropriate driver - with the
results that you saw. I have had this happen with my (Creative)
soundcard. As in your case going to the vendors site and getting the
correct latest driver solved the problem.

This is one of the reasons I don't use Auto update. This sort of
behaviour is livable-with for an informed Windows user - it must cause
chaos amongst the general population!
