My Epson scanner & Logitech camera are no longer recognized by Windows
"Scanners and Cameras". I am running XP with SP2 installed. I have visited
the Web site provided by Yves Alarie on Google, but nothing there seemed to
work including deleting Real Player V10.

Thanks for any help you can provide,

The page you visited is for cameras with removable storage (memory card) and
is not applicable to scanners and a camera (videocam) like Logitech.
When you open My Computer, your scanner and your logitech should be listed
there. Do you see them listed?
I guess not, since you say they are not recognized.

If so, first thing to check is the USB connection. When you connect or
disconnect these devices to you hear a sound or get a message on your
screen? Probably not.
Go to Control panel>Performance>System>Hardware>Device Manager>Universal
Serial Bus Controller. Open the list and see if your scanner and Logitech
are listed there. If there is a problem, there will be yellow flag. Right
click on it and click on Properties and Troubleshoot. If you need to
re-install the driver you can do it from there also.

Yves,

A couple of more ponts of clarification:
1. The Epson scanner I have is a combination printer/scanner. The printer
portion is working fine, but not the scanner. Also, I also get a "new device
added" sound when I disconnect and re-connect the printer/scanner USB cable.
2. The scanner works with Roxio Capture using a WIA connection, but not
from "Scanners and Camera" in "Control Panel".
3. I do not get the "new device added" sound when I disconnect and
re-connect the Logitech camera USB cable.
4. There are no no yellow flags in Device Manager beside any of the USB
ports. There is an "unknown device" shown against what I believe is the
Logitech camera, however there is no available update on the web when I
request an "Update Driver..." Also, I have tried the "Toubleshooting" steps
but with no luck.
5. Roxio Capture recognizes the presence of the Logitech camera, however,
it incorrectly reports that the camera is unplugged when I try to use it.

The only conclusion that I can reach from all of this is that my Windows XP
no longer recognizes any TWAIN devices. Any further thoughts?

Regards,
Doug

First time I run into this problem of Roxio taking over a scanner and a
videocam away from XP, but Roxio is known to do this kind of stuff.
If you use Roxio to copy to CD or DVD drives it takes these drives away from
XP and you no longer can use XP to copy to them. In this case it is easy to
repair, you simply right click on the drive, then properties and recording
and enable the drive to record and you can use XP again.
In your case, I really don't know how to get XP back.
Obviously there is nothing wrong with the USB connection and XP does indeed
see your devices and they function using Roxio, but you just can't start
them using XP.
Can you recall if this problem started after using Roxio with these devices?

If XP does indeed recognize the devices and they are listed under Scanners
and Cameras when you open My Computer, right click on the listed device and
click on properties and then on the Events tab. See what you have there.
Probably set to Roxio. If so, change it to your scanner name or try using
Prompt for which program to run.
Do the same thing for the logitech. Roxio cannot use "Capture" with this. It
can capture only from a camera with a memory card or from a camcorder.

Yves,

Only the Epson Printer/Scanner shows up in the "Scanners and Camera" Window.
The only mention of "Roxio Capture" is as an option in the non-activated
"Start this program" radio button in the Epsnon Scanner Properties>Events
window. Presently the "Prompt for which program to run" radio button is and
always has been activated.

Also, please note that the Logitech camera does not work in either "Scanners
and Camera" where it does not show up, or in "Roxio Capture" where it
indicates that the camera is not connected.

Doug

For Logitech I would simply uninstall it from add/remove under control panel
and then connect the device. XP should recognize it "you have new hardware"
etc. and offer to install it again. However it would be nice to know why
this happened.

For your scanner, right click on it and click on Scan on the opening menu. A
list will open, select the software you want to scan with. If you always
want this software, check the box "Always..."
