TV Wonder VE - did I waste my money?

Hello. I wanted a tv card that I could use to record tv shows and
movies and convert vhs to dvd. I bought a TV Wonder VE and I am
totally disappointed with the picture quality. I was assuming that any
card would give me a picture that was equal in quality to the picture
on the tv, that the difference in price was due to the software that
came with the card. Was I wrong about that? I tried using different
coax, and I tried the updated software from ATI's website. That didn't
help. Is there anything I can do to improve the picture quality, or is
that the price I pay for getting a cheaper card?

Also, this thing is supposed to get up to 125 channels, my cable
package goes up to channel 78, but I can't get anything above channel
62. It says those channel are unavailable when I run autoscan. What is
the reason for that?

I just bought the same card and I agree on the image quality.
But I figured out why ... the monitor is much finer than the
TV set as an "image shower" and so it brings out what the
image actually looks like ... upon that there is no possible
circuitry that makes the image look better such as a TV
set may have. Also the card only has a "composite in" for
use with the included splitter, no "out to" a VCR, play only.
You might record with the TV card's recording software,
edit, and burn to disc all in the computer. I get no problem
with my cable channel line-up though.

Don't have a VE, but on the channel problem, are the channels above 62
pay channels? (HBO, Showtime, etc) I believe that the only way to get
those channels, is through a cable box, as they are "scrambled" channels.
And even if you paid for them, the cable box does the de-scrambling. At
least around where I live that's how it seems.

Only three of those channels are pay channels, the rest are basic
cable channels. I was able to view them by running the coax straight
from the converter box into my tv card, but I had to unhook it from
the tv to do it, so that's not a long-term solution. The picture still
sucked though.
