I have a film scanner that will do 4000 dpi. Is there any advantage in
scanning at this for a 32" widescreen TV slideshow? Indeed is there any
disadvantage (apart from the file size) - Is there an 'optimum' resolution
that would work better? Above which no discernable improvement could be seen
on a TV screen?

If you are saving as a Jpeg and playing back via your DVD machine, then
using too high a resolution might actually reduce the on screen quality.

I find that 800 x 600 or 1024 x 760 will do fine for a normal shape screen.
I have not used a Wide Screen, so you might be able to widen the picture by
using more Pixels on the Horizontal.

The actual size of the screen is irrelevant, it will have the same number of
lines as a smaller screen.

Here is a page on that very subject.
