Hey again,

come back for some info on upgrading my laptop pc (presario 2100 by compaq). It's a couple of years old now and due to lack of funds (im a student) I'm gona have to upgrade rather than just buy a new one for now. A lot of my work involves media so I need a way of playing media files, i.e, avi and mpeg on a tv screen. I've heard that a certain graphics card and lead is needed but I am a dunce when it comes to this so I need your advice people!!

How can I play media files on a tv screen from my laptop????????????????????

(if I can at all)

Cheers for any help

Dan

Does your laptop have a S-Video, or a Composite out socket? if not, i don't know a way of getting one put in!

there is a nine pin socket at the back with the illustration I0I0I,

also a socket (opposite to the nine pin, i.e, the female part if that makes sense) with more than nine holes but the same size with the illustration I[]I.

No idea about the s-video??

Yes as KGB says you will need an S-Vedio out to be able to project it on the screen. However, the quality of the output will be nothing great as I understand this model HP Compaq does have the S-Video output so you should be able to manage it without having to upgrade it, it also has 512 MB Ram which is good enough for the purpose. The only caveat is the USB port which is older standard 1.1, not that you need it for any purpose to project video.

If you want to upgrade you could put in another stick of 512 Ram to make things faster, other than that I am afraid there is nothing much to upgrade in this package.

The ports that your laptop has are as follows:

Port(s) total (free) / Connector type 2 USB, 1 Parallel IEEE 1284 (EPP/ECP), 1 Serial RS-232, 1 Keyboard / mouse Generic, 1 Headphones Output, 1 Microphone Input, 1 Display / video VGA, 1 Display / video S-video output, 1 Modem Phone line, 1 Network Ethernet 10Base-T/100Base-TX

What you need is an S-Video cable only and you need to configure your laptop to give out the signal form the S-Video output onto the screen. The cable should not cost you a lot but you can check it out from any hifi dealer who usually stock them. They sell expensive one as well but for this application the expensive one will hardly make a difference to the picture quality so get yourself a normal one which you can afford.

I hope this helps

cheers for all your help.

Think I know what to do now.

The only point of contact for the cable is similar but has seven pin holes rather than the picture from KGB911. But I hope this is it.

cheers

djjones69 , please post back ur findings telling us the quality of the image that comes up on your tv screen!
thanks

hey,

just one more question. Is the seven pinned socket on the back of my laptop a S-video socket? It is yellow in colour if that helps and has an illustration above it that looks like an 's' next to a tv with an arrow pointing out of it.

Also what type of cable should I look for? An s-video (4 or 7 pin) to a ?? (for use with a fairly new TV).

cheers

Here is the pic of the cable itself, as you can see it has four pins :)

Hey again,

finally got the s-video to scart cable sorted---anyone know how to set it up so that I can play my media files on the tv it is connected to?????

cheers

Dan

you need to detect a secondary display if i remember rightly, it will become the secondary monitor om display properties, you then extend the picture on to the secondary display (theres a tickbox) you then drag whatever you want over to the TV, just like you had an extra wide display.

You want the res for the TV at 800x600, nothing more unless it's plasma.

With your S-video to scart adaptor, it WILL only work if the scart port you are trying to plug it in to is S-video enabled. or else it will kick it out in black & white.
