TV Capture and huge TMP files

When I capture an hour of TV wit WMM2 a 200,000+ KB WMV is created as
expected (which I can then trim/compress) but also a 2GB+ WMT***.TMP is
generated. This slows the system right down as virtual memory is hit until
the WMV creation is finished.

What is this TMP file? Can I avoid it?
 
Figured out I should use a lower initial capture rate as I am going to
compress anyway - so now capturing at 10 times less.
