I'm a techincally challenged grandma so please answer me like you would a
child. I am running Vista on a new computer - big leap from Win 98. I tried
to respond to Craig's List posting and Windows Mail insists I set up a non
HTML acct. to do so. I am using MSN and Hotmail. I tried setting up my
Yahoo acct but am doing something wrong. Is it all because Windows Mail is
set as the default? If so, I have tried everything in the book to undo that
and have not found the correct options.

Your MSN, Hotmail and Yahoo accounts are probably HTTP (web mail) only.
Windows Mail doesn't do web mail. Doesn't your ISP give you a POP
(non-HTTP) mail address? You could use that in Windows Mail.

i am having this same problem. I purchased a new computer and it came with
Vista. When I try to respond or send a link, i get a message that Windows
Mail doesn't work with Vista and a wizard pops up. It's hard to believe that
a new/better version (Vista) does not support such a basic email function.
I, too, am a computer novice and would sincerely appreciate step-by-step
directions on how to use the wizard to correct this problem. thank, ct

Your ISP should have a support page on their website that walks you
through the process of setting up a mail account in Outlook Express.
Just follow those directions.

I have Qwest DSL and they only offer me MSN as an email provider and that's
how Qwest set up my new computer. I sort of understand about the HTTP (I
thought it was HTML!) and POP and have an email acct. with Yahoo which is
POP. But, when I tried to respond to the Craig's List posting this popup
showed up and required me to set up an email account to use. Where I run
into trouble is when they ask me for incoming and outgoing server
information. The tutorial shows - pop.example.com and - smtp.example.com.
So, I inserted Yahoo for the first example and MSN for the second. I just
don't know what I am doing and and can't get the Yahoo account set up with
Windows Mail so that it will work. That's why I just wanted to turn it off.
I will not use it since my primary email is MSN and secondary Hotmail and
Yahoo. Yahoo has not responded to my inquiries about server information and
I cannot find it anywhere on their website. I haven't installed Office yet
so don't have Outlook yet. But, I have the feeling that Windows Mail will
just over ride and take control. 98 was much easier to deal with.

Gary, thank you for being so helpful. Unfortunately, I do not have the
Premium Yahoo account so can't access the link. I will try clicking on it
from this page and see if I can get thru, but it will probably ask me to sign
in. I saw on another posting that you said Windows Mail Live will be here
soon. Do you think that will solve this problem? Is it something you have
to subscribe to or will it just be a free update from MS? I have a friend
who has set my older computer up to network with my new computer. He
installed another hard drive that runs 2000 and I tried to respond to Craig's
List and got the same problem. I will try accessing C List with the drive
with 98 and see what happens. You are kind to help so many people in
distress.

Anyone should be able to access the link I gave below.
However, US Yahoo subscribers can use that POP/SMTP server
information only if they pay for their Yahoo account.

The new (free) email program, Windows Live Mail, which Microsoft is
scheduled to release over the next few days will include access to
free HotMail and MSN accounts.

Gary - Again, thank you for taking time to answer my questions. I did access
the Yahoo page and went so far as to try and add my Yahoo account to Windows
Mail, but you are right about it not working. Those settings are only for
the chosen few. It just seem that if you are paying for DSL and an MSN mail
account, you should be able to use it with Windows Mail. Isn't MSN part of
Microsoft? Also Hotmail? Thanks

Dump them and get a truly portable free email service - Gmail.

Yes, I believe your QWEST DSL account entitles you to premium MSN
service which includes POP/SMTP access. Unfortunately I don't have
their server names or settings. Your ISP should be able to give you
that information.

hello Gary (and Patricia and gt)

Having spent 2hours trying to leave a quick (!) comment on a website, I am
as frustrated as the rest of you.

The wizard won't let me set hotmail as default, the pade that says "http:
mail is no longer.... heres why" doesn't tell me why - and then directs me to
page about hand held devices ????

If you do not have the office suite (inc. outlook) what, if any options do
you have for responding to the "click here to leave a comment" buttons on
websites you visit?

This is the first time I've bought a brand new computer and I assumed it
would all be idiot proof!

Please continue posting if you find a solution - I would consider gmail -
but I recently signed for a yahoo account and feel I would prefer to stay
with Hotmail

Many thanks - and FYI - money is an issue, I don't want to subscribe to any
services and can't afford to buy more software right now.
