Turning Off the HP Photosmart 7350

My last printer was an Epson and it had to be powered off at the
Printer On/Off switch each time you used it in order to properly park
the heads so the cartridges didn't clog. I'd prefer to be able to
power on/off my new HP 7350 from my master surge center switch along
with everything else or just leave the printer turned on always. Will
this harm the Hp 7350? Anybody out there doing this? Is it O.K. to
just leave it constantly on?

Tx,
Rick

I have an HP 5550, and I think I remember reading in the manual not to power
it off with a surge protector. (I would look it up, but the manual is in CA
and I'm in KY right now). As for leaving it on all the time, I'm not sure
what it would to the printer, but it seems to be a waste of electricity IMO.

When turned off by the printers switch but still conected to the supply it
uses a minimal amount of power to stop the heads cloging.

It is best to not turn the printer off at a power strip, for a couple of
reasons. The printer automatically caps the cartridges a short time after
printing, but if you turn the printer off from an external switch the printer
may not have had time to properly park the cartridges. Secondly, there is an
internal clock in the printer that keeps track of how long it has been since
the last print job. If the power is removed the printer will default to the
longest time, which will result in more servicing.

As for leaving the printer on, this is fine. The printer goes into an
automatic standby mode a short time after finishing a print job. The printer
is Energy Star rated, and uses only a few watts of power in the automatic
standby state. Leaving the printer in the on state for a year would cost about
$1 in my area.
