Since installing a new hard drive I cannot turn off my
computer without having to wait for everything to close
and then wait for a message saying it is now safe to turn
off your computer and then pressing the on switch for
approximately 10 seconds (very frustrating)What has
happened and how can I fix the problem

Have you simply added a hard-drive as a slave to the original hard-drive? Or,
have you "replaced" the original hard-drive with the new hard-drive? Or, is the
new hard-drive on a different IDE channel and set as the slave or the master on
that IDE channel?

Or, are you using SCSI?

Go to Control Panel and double-click Power Options. On the 'APM' tab make
sure 'Enable Advanced Power Management Support' is checked. If that doesn't
work right-click My Computer and hit Properties | Hardware | Device Manager
and expand the "+" beside Computer. If it says 'Standard PC' rather than
'ACPI PC' you are probably not going to be able to get it to work correctly.
This site should also shed some light on the problem:

Hi!
I face the same sentiment as Kevin, having problems when
turnig off my PC, same message telling me it is now safe
to turn off the computer. To answer your questions, yes I
have a new hard drive and I set it as the primary master
IDE, and old one as the secondary master IDE, my CMOS
setup is IDE-0, then floppy, then CDROM, may ask if it is
in my CMOS set up that causing this problem? What IDE
channel should I use? Thanks and more power.
