My PC running Win XP has an option in power management to turn the hard disks
off after "X" number of minutes of inactivity. Is this a good thing to do or
not. Thanks for any comments.

I personally only spin down drives in laptops
and notebooks where the battery life matters.

I normally set my timing to be on all the time. My mp3/video server in the
other room is set for two hours. Another machine that I use to read long
text web pages is set to a couple of minutes to kill the noise.

But spinning up the drives often will do more to stress them than letting
them run all the time (except leaving them on during thunderstorms).
