I do one of two things. Either press the reset button to
force the machine to boot again or push the power button.
With the power button you may have to hold the button in
for 4 or 5 seconds (i do with mine) before it actually
turns off.

Hope this helps

Thanks a lot for the tip - I don't seem to have a reset
button on my machine (it's a Dell Dimension 4600), but I
probably did not press the power button long enough to make
it shut down. I'll try that next time!

There might be some BIOS option to change the behaviour of the power
button. I know it took me long enough to find out (old Targa... didn't have
a reset button either until I re-wired the doze knob on the motherboard)

If a process hangs, you can use the task manager to kill it off. That goes
for Explorer, too.

In case of a Blue Screen Of Death -- you can use the system control panel
(aka "My Computer" properties) to make it reboot automatically. (Of course
I'd first try to eliminate the problem if that happens repeatedly.)

Mh, I better stop before I turn into Captain Obvious.

Keep in mind that doing this all the time is not a good idea, you should
also try to address the cause of these hangs.
