Turning off alerts

Since reformatting my hard drive and reinstalling outlook, I'm unable to turn
off the alert feature that is automatically there. I've done what should
turn it off, tools-options-other-advanced optoins-and turn off alerts, but
they continue to come up. Any suggestions as to what I'm not doing right?
Note to Microsoft. It would be nice if features like this that probably few
people use were something that had to be turned on, not that had to be
disabled by the majority who probably don't use it.

Version of Outlook? Which alert is it? The Desktop alert (the blue window)
is disabled at tools, options, email options, advanced email options.

FWIW, if it needed to be enabled, no one would use it - so they enable them
and let the users turn them off if they don't want them.

It's 2003, and it's the calendar alert I'm having trouble with, not e-mail.
I'm ok with the e-mail alerts, but it's a pain in the rear to have to disable
a calendar alert every time I make an entry. I simply put in outlook the
people I need to see or call in a particular day, and the specific time is
irrelevant to me, so the last thing in the world I need is some alert going
off every 15 minutes. What I've done has worked before, but this time, it
isn't, and I've done it on both my desktop and laptop with the same "no
results."

This sounds more like you should be using tasks instead of calendar
appointments, since the time doesn't matter. Anyway, click Tools>Options
and uncheck "Default reminder" in the "Calendar" section of the Preferences
tab.

I did that, but the little bell is still there every time I make an entry.
I've done this on several other occasions, and it's always worked, but not
this time.

If the Reminder box on the event form always checked before you save it?

There is no option for alerts on that dialogue.

There is a reminders dialog on the advanced options. It disables all
reminders, including reminders you want - it's great for dismissing 100's of
old reminders after vacation. It doesn't remove them, it just keeps them
from firing when due. When turned on, future reminders will work again.

I guess I consider reminders and alerts to be different things. Alerts are
for new messages coming in (Tools>Options>E-mail Options>Advanced E-mail
Options contains the word "Alert"). Reminders are for calendar events and
follow-ups. Tools>Options>Other>Advanced Options contains the word
"Reminder". The word "alert" doesn't appear there. Maybe I'm too picky.

Yes, reminders and alerts are two different things and alerts are for new
messages... but not every user uses the correct US English terminology or
copies text word for word. When I mentioned the location of the desktop
alert he clarified what he meant by alert: "I'm ok with the e-mail alerts,
but it's a pain in the rear to have to disable a calendar alert every time I
make an entry. " He's trying to disable them using the global setting and
it should stop the reminders from firing, but they will still be set unless
he also disables it in tools, options, preferences.

If they still fire with the global option off, then the reminder service is
messed up.
