Turn off Windows Defender?

I have Windows Vista 64-bit. Windows Defender is installed and I can't
remember whether it came with Vista or whether I downloaded it.

This is my issue. I turned Windows Defender on and now I think it's messing
with with my Norton Phising Protection - I also downloaded IE Beta 8 at the
same time so it could even be that messing with the Phising Protection.
Either way, I want to deal with Windows Defender first.

Since I'm not able to uninstall it, I figured I would turn it off, but,
can't find where or how to turn it off. I found quite a few articles and
Help files that give the following instructions:

"Click Tools, and then click Options.
Under Administrator options, select or clear the Use Windows Defender check
box, and then click Save. If you are prompted for an administrator password
or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation."

That sounds really easy ... the only problem is, I don't see "Administrator
Options" under options. I only have Automatic Actions and Default Actions
(for alert items).

What to do? I can't turn it off and I can't uninstall it. What am I
missing here?

Hello Jules,

I have Windows Vista 32-bit. WD it came with Vista .

I have Norton 2007 and Phising Protection is on and I don't have any
problem there.

Scroll down towards the bottom for the page of WD to Administrator options.

Do you have Windows Live OneCare installed? Having that will turn off
Defender by default.

Why you want to deal with Windows Defender first.??

Like I said WD and Norton work together.

I hope this is enough to get you on the right road for nºw.

Other than that, I'm about out of ideas, so good luck with it. Let us know
maybe someone else can conjure up something else to try.

Good luck

Defender is a part of Vista--it comes with.

You can disable it within the program--Tools, Options, grab the scroll bar
on the right of the window and slide all the way to the bottom--"Use Windows
Defender"

Uncheck that.

Duh! I am so blind! I never saw the scrollbar (maybe time to change my
theme colors).

It's not Defender messing with my Phising Protection. It has to be IE 8
Beta then .....

Many thanks for the help.
Jules
