Turn off Spell Check temporarily?

I'm creating a technical doc in Word 2007. It is computer related info,
i.e. a lot of acronyms and abbreviations. 80% of the document has the
little red squiggly lines indicating spelling errors.
Is there a way to turn off Spell Check per document? Or would I need to go
into Word setup, turn it off, then turn it back on after I'm done?

In that document, press Ctrl+A to select everything. On the Review tab, in
the Proofing group, click the Set Language button and check the box in the
dialog for "Do not check spelling or grammar".

When you're setting up a template to start on a document like this, it's
useful to define a character style that applies just this setting; then
anything that you mark with that style won't be checked, while everything
else will be checked. At this point, though, it may not be worth going back
and marking all the acronyms.

With 'that document' open ...
__Office button (click)
____Word Options button (bottom of menu - click)
____Proofing (3rd item left side - click)
______Exceptions for 'that document' (bottom of dialog)
________CHECK either or both boxex
 
Where or how would I define the character style you're referring to? I like
that idea.
 
Here's the simplest way:

- Select any word that already has "Do not check spelling" applied to it.

- Right-click and choose Styles > Save selection as a new Quick Style.

- In the dialog that appears, click the Modify button.

- Change the name from the suggested "Style1" to something like
"NoProofing", and change the style type from "Linked (paragraph and
character)" to "Character". At this point, the description below the preview
box should say "Do not check spelling or grammar, Style: Quick Style,
Priority: 2, Based on: Default Paragraph Font".

- Click the option button at the bottom for "New documents based on this
template" and click OK.

Additionally, if you want a keyboard shortcut to apply the style, go to
Office button > Word Options > Customize, and click the Keyboard Customize
button. Select the category Styles, then select your style, enter a
shortcut, and click the Assign button.
