I have a question:
- From the internet I obtain some information on how to
shutdown windows xp in case of problem. One is to start,
run and type: shutdown /?. I have tried this but this
does not work. Why is this?
- I just found out about the hibernate function. It seems
to solve the problem. My question:

Is that going to affect the computer's performance?
Why does the hibernate work and the turn-off does not?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Hi there,

To fix the shutdown problem, try these patches:

http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/regs_edits/shutdown.reg

http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/regs_edits/autoendall.vbs

Usage: Download files to your computer and simply double-
click it so that it would automatically get installed.

NOTE: Norton anti-virus software might warn you of
a "malicious" script, this is normal if you have "Script
Safe" or similar technology enabled.
I recommend you to choose "Authorize entire script" option
next Action.

Now, verify if the problem is resolved. However, if the
problem still persists then, the next step would be to
disable unwanted startup programs. Perform below steps:

Run MSConfig, perform the following steps:

1. Click Start and select Run.
2. Type "MSConfig" (with out quotes) and press Enter.
3. Click the Startup tab.
4. From the list, deselect unnecessary programs.
5. Click OK.
6. Restart the system.

NOTE: To restore any of the removed items, repeat the
above-
mentioned steps and select the checkboxes for
the designated applications.

If the issue still persists then, visit following
Microsoft website:

Here is a small info about hibernation:

BTW it does not affect the performance...

Hibernation reduces the start time, saves the complete
state of the computer and turns off the power. When you
resume from hibernation the BIOS performs the typical
Power On Self Test (POST), and then reads the hibernation
file, Hiberfil.sys, to restore the state of the computer.
Everything that was running when you put the computer in
hibernation is restored.
