Turn-Off button does Restart job

I just got a new pc with XP (home) on it.

The start up and shut down stuff worked okay at first.
Now when I hit the "turn off" button, it always restarts
the p.c.

How can I tell the pc to actually turn off when I say to
turn off?

If you mean the turn-off button on your computer, then do the following:

Right click on desktop -> properties -> screen saver tab -> Power button ->
advanced tab -> and change the settings in the 2 last options on the page
titled "When I press the power button on my computer:" and "When I press the
sleep button on my computer:" and that should work.
