Turn Off Auto Numbering

I am taking numbered items from a list and want to display them in separate text boxes in a PPT slide, preserving the numbering so that people can reference the complete item

However, every time I type one in, PPT assumes that I am creating a numbered list and auto-numbers the next one, which is normally not correct. Worse, it assumes that the line I just typed was also a numbered list and may change formatting on me

In WORD, this "feature" can be turned off. In PPT it is a tremendous pain.

Any assistance would be welcomed

Hello James,

Typically, PowerPoint takes it's settings from Word.
However, perjhaps the simplest thing to do is not use the
autoformatting for numbering and simply type in the
numbers or else highlight the text and select format,
bullets and numbering and have it start at a different
number.

As goes Word, so goes PowerPoint. Eventually. ;-)

Choose Tools, Autocorrect.
Click the "AutoFormat As You Type" tab
Remove the checkmark next to "Automatic bulleted and numbered lists"
Click OK

Does that make it behave?

Glenna -

Unfortunately, I cannot find anything that has to do with auto format. I always turn it off in WORD as it's such a pain. However, there is nothing similar in PPT 2000, so it keeps formatting things as a numbered list even though I don't want it to

Thanks, though

Unfortunately, this solution is not available to me in PPT 2000.

Gotcha. But:

Tools, Options, Edit tab, remove the check next to "AutoFormat as you type"
turns off autonumbering in 2000. Will probably deal with the bullets too.

Steve -

thanks. Didn't see the auto-format the first several times I was there (either that or just ignored it)

It worked as predicted

Thanks again

Great! Thanks for letting me know. (and fwiw, I had to peer at it a couple times to find
it too.)

[CRITICAL UPDATE - Anyone using Office 2003 should install the critical
update as soon as possible. From PowerPoint, choose "Help -> Check for
Updates".]

Hello,

It sounds that, although this functionality is included in PowerPoint, that
you were not able to find it. It would be great to know what steps you went
through to find this capability in PowerPoint so that we can know where to
improve our help content, user interface, etc. so that it will be easier to
discover this capability in some future version of PowerPoint

If you (or anyone else reading this message) have any suggestions on how to
make it easier to locate this functionality, don't forget to send your
feedback (in YOUR OWN WORDS, please) to Microsoft at:

http://register.microsoft.com/mswish/suggestion.asp

It's VERY important that, for EACH wish, you describe in detail, WHY it is
important TO YOU that your product suggestion be implemented. A good wish
submssion includes WHAT scenario, work-flow, or end-result is blocked by
not having a specific feature, HOW MUCH time and effort ($$$) is spent
working around a specific limitation of the current product, etc. Remember
that Microsoft receives THOUSANDS of product suggestions every day and we
read each one but, in any given product development cycle, there are ONLY
sufficient resources to address the ones that are MOST IMPORTANT to our
customers so take the extra time to state your case as CLEARLY and
COMPLETELY as possible so that we can FEEL YOUR PAIN.

IMPORTANT: Each submission should be a single suggestion (not a list of
suggestions).
