i just tried to make a .scr from the slideshow in irfan view. but even
though the gif is animated when i double click it and it opens in
irfanview, when i have it in a slideshow it doesn't animate.

is there a freeware that makes a screensaver from an animated gif?

thanks,

It is not very clear what you have done, but I think that you have
forgotten to extract the frames of the animated gifs. You must load the
frames into the slideshow, set the desired options and then save as .scr.
This works.

i tried that but some of the extracted frames are smaller images that
just have whatever changed from the previous frame. for exmaple, the
gif i wanted to use is a lord of the rings paraody. there is one part
where they shoot the ring into a mountain by accident and there is
text over the mountain saying, "stupid..nngf...ring" then it switches
to, "ah, there it is".

the first frame is the mountain with the "stupid ring" line, the next
frame doesn't have the mountain, it is a much smaller image with a
transparent backgroun that just says, "ah there it is." so i'm still
looking...

Use Ulead Gif Animator 2.0, or another capable gif animator, to either
merge or regenerate frames. From what you tell me I think that merging
frames will do the job. Merge the smaller frame with the full-sized
previous frame, until all frames are full-sized. Then extract the frames
and build the screensaver.
