I am using Windows 98 tuneup.exe (dos file) to run a few
programs, scandisk, cleanmgr etc. I have a dual boot
setup so that I can boot either in Win 98 (C: or Win XT
F:) When I try to use tuneup in windows XT the program
locks up and after about 10 or so "cancels" the program
finally stops without ever having done anything.
What am I doing wrong?

First of all I think you meant XP not XT but your program is not compatible
with XP because with the security and code written into XP it will not allow
any program to directly access the hardware, including the hard drive in a
way that could cause problems. Also, if you have NFTS file system then the
programs is probably made to work with Fat 32. I would even be careful
using it in 98 since it may cause problems with XP. There are a lot of
newer utilities that are XP compatibility. In fact XP includes a lot of the
programs replacement.

There is no scandisk in Windows XP; in fact, I believe it it was replaced by
Check Disk after Windows 95. Anyway, go to: Start/All
Programs/Accessories/Command Prompt/ then type "chkdsk /?" [less the quote
markers] after the blinking cursor (be sure that there is a space between
the k & /). You will then see some brief help and the parameters for this
Tool. The way I generally enter it is: "chkdsk c: /r /x" [replace the c with
the letter corresponding to the drive you want checked]. Again, this is
entered at the Accessories/Command Prompt window. Also while in the
Accessories list, click System Tools and you will see "Disk Cleanup" and the
"Disk Defragment" tools.
