Have a win2k adv server, terminal server all activated
and licensed. SP3 is installed and functioning. "old"
client computers still appear as used licenses and so not
release. Most all Workstations are running XP Pro and
now have a new ws with xp pro. Try to connect to TS
server and it responds in the error log that it cannot
issue a license. I thought that XP pro had its own
license and shouldn't need a cal issued? How do I
correct that and how do I remove the "old" ws's from the
list that are using up cals? Further, kb #315262
mentions that you can go into the registry and delete the
license00x hey from the pool as license000 is the
operating system, but I only have the license000. If I
delete that key will it release the licenses or just
delete my server's activation?

Please help!

Yes, you are correct, Windows XP Pro machines shouldn't
require you to purchase an additional TSCAL, however they
do require you to have a running and activitated TS
licensing server (which you do).

Can you post the exact text of the eventlog entry about
this error?

About the "old" clients which still held licenses:
licenses that were installed on the LS *before* the LS used SP3
are permanently issued to a client. The only way to get these
licenses back when the client is discarded is to phone the
Clearinghouse.
Licenses that were installed *after* SP3 get an expiration date
and will be automatically returned to the LS after 52-89 days.

About your XP Pro client: this is weird. This client should get a
free TS CAL from the LS (the TS CAL is *not* build-in on the
client, it is issued for free by the LS).
The fact that the client does not have the registry entry for the
license matches your description of the problem: it never received
a license. Do not delete the license000.

Is there anything in the EventLog when this client tries to
connect (apart from not being able to issue a license)? Have you
verified that the TS can locate the LS? Is the new ws a fresh
install or an upgrade? Has the LS been moved from one server to
another?

Try connect client first to some other terminal server,
have helped me many times. Still don't know why server
sometime can't issue a license.

What's the eventlog id for that? 1006? 1004?

When were those licenses issued? If the licenses were
issued before SP3, then I would call the Microsoft
Clearinghouse and have then reissue you your licenses.
This should be done regardless of this problem, since this
will most likely be an issue later on down the road.
