I currently have an 80G Drive...only of which 69 is of use to my memory....ANYWAY....i was wondering if it was possible to upgrade this....or is that just for making computers...i see hardrives on sale all the time but would i need a Dell hard drive....Dell Dimension E310 is what i have BTW...

Just wondering, because i tryed using my sisters EMachine Drive and it would not work...

Yes, you can "upgrade" your HD ... but there is a lot more to it than just bungin in a new drive and turning on the PC.

You have a Dell, well that tells me you do not have a "real" copy of Windows, so you may need to get yourself one ... However, your Dell should have a Microsoft "Proof of Licence Certificate of Authenticity" on it somewhere with your Product Key ... You can use anybodies copy of XP to install to the new HD, make sure, if you have XP Home, that you use an XP home CD, & a Pro CD if you have XP Pro.

The "trick" is to use YOUR Product Key, which is licenced to you, and NOT the Key that came with the CD ... fear not, this is not illegal.

You will need to make sure you have all the driver required for your particular Dell, they should be easy enough to find from Dell's website.

There is some "preparation" to do to the HD prier to installation, which is simply ensuring the little "jumper" on the back of the drive is set to master, and not slave or cable select as some drive manufacturers seem to do. It's then just a case of connecting it the same way as the one in you PC ... On Dell's website I think they even show you how to do this ... with pretty pictures. :D

The reason the E-Machine HD did not "work" could be many, but more likely it was crap just like their PCs. ;)

Enjoy!

Your confusing me now - are you after upgrading your Memory or Hard Drive - they are two completely different things

If you're simply needing more storage space I don't see that you need to upgrade your C drive. Why not just add another drive as a slave? Much easier. If you go this way you'll have to make sure your second drive is set to 'slave' by changing the jumpers on the back. This is what I assumed was 'wrong' with your sisters drive, i.e. because it has already been set as the 'master' drive. Let us know more precisely what you're trying to achieve.

What i meant by upgrading was like getting more Memory.....like a 300 G Drive...
Sorry, your "terminology" is a little off ... ;)

Memory is what the PC uses to actually work ... Hard drives is the space needed to store programs & your data.

Memory is the electronic holding place for instructions and data that your computer's microprocessor can reach quickly. When your computer is in normal operation, its memory usually contains the main parts of the operating system and some or all of the application programs and related data that are being used. Memory is often used as a shorter synonym for random access memory (RAM). ...

I wanted to add another Hard Drive to achieve more space....i tryed placing my sisters Drive in my computer but it would not fit my wires....... Im guessing Zorro Fox knows what im talking about.....BASICALLY i have an 80G drive and i want more Gs. I want like 300G. My sisters E-Machine Drive would not fit in my tower...well it literally can fit but it would not hook up to the wires...
