Dear all, we're trying to setup a work area for video work and
management on a network share...

with what little I've gleaned from lurking here, and looking at
PapaJohn's page (good one, by the way), I've learned that it's not as
simple as it looks..

the intent is to capture with a laptop, and then put the clips on a
network share for backups and access from several desktops.. I
understand that the data is able to be there, but the movie maker seems
to want to have a "directory" on the C drive. Can what I want be done
at all?

Jim

Hi Jim,

With my home network I'm able to use my laptop to make movies, with the
source files on a different computer, and the resultant saved movie on a 3rd
computer.... both accessed via network paths and not drive letters.

Seems feasible. Each computer would need to be running XP to work on a
project, so they would have MM2 on their C drives. I don't understand your
comment about that. But the computers with the source files and saved movies
could be Windows 98 or something else.

PapaJohn

hhmm.. would the changes done on one project, then, be reflected on the
others?

Jim

Movie Maker is not a multi-user app, so only one at a time should be
using/changing the project file.... but you could have a library of project
files on a server and people could check them out and put them back..... and
the source files could be on the server too, so all could use the same ones.

PapaJohn

That would be excellent... we only have a small pool of 2-3 people
diddling with these..

so, I've moved all the source mpg's and so forth, and now the .wmm files
that moviemaker stores the clip info in should go in there, right?

Thanks so much for your help, sir..

Jim

Yes, the project files should go there.... the .MSWMM ones.

You could forget about sharing the collection database, as the project files
can work independently of it..... if you need to share the collections, see
the Managing > Collections page of www.papajohn.org for some ideas.

When you move source and project files, you might end up with a lot of big
red X's on the clips and have to re-link things.... it's easy if you work
with few folders, as all you need to relink them is point MM2 to one of
them.

PapaJohn

Thank you sooo dadgone much.... now to go fix that ibm db2 link...
amazing how things to do pop up instead of what you WANT to do....

sigh..

Jim the thankful
