I am in the mist of a problem with my Gateway Vista Desktop. I am trying to
do a clean install of my Vista OS. I had some problems with some unexpected
shut downs on this computer, and I said enough is enough. After countless
attempts to try to resolve the problem, I decided to do a clean install, and
get rid of the file that was causing the problem. Anyway, the Gateway techs
suggested that I do a device recovery, and I can go from there. I did 3
times, and it is causing some minor problems with start up or shut downs. My
display setting won't stick. It keeps putting the icons/startup task bar way
over to the left, so I have to go to graphic properties and keep changing the
setting. But the tech last night told me that it would be better to install
from a recovery disc. She will send it to me for $20. She said that is
better cause it will have all the drivers, etc. that I need. The way that I
been doing it, is that I been installing from a partition from my hard drive,
and that may not download all the drivers that is essential to run my Gateway
correctly. So I did another device recovery and am working with that, until
the recovery disc comes in the mail next week. The question or concern that
I have is Are they right? Am I going to get a better install with the disc
that they mail me. ? Will that format my dirve to the point that that will
give me a better performance? Any views? Thanks

It's a really good idea to have the physical recovery media and $20 is a
very fair price. This way if your hard drive dies you'll be able to get
back to factory condition without having to purchase a retail copy of
Windows.

You will need to review the documentation that came with your computer
(or look on Gateway's tech support site) for a definitive answer, but
generally using the restore disk will take the machine back to factory
condition. There is no way for us in the newsgroup to know if this will
solve your problems. If the issues were caused by some software you
installed, then it will. If the issues were caused by faulty hardware,
then it won't and you'll then contact Gateway tech support for
repair/replacement.
