Hi,

I am trying to network my winxp desktop and win2k laptop so that I can
share files between the two. As it stands now, I can share internet
access between them. I followed the instructions in this thread As I
was having the same issue as the person who started it.
http://groups-beta.google.com/group...39718d117?q=netsetup+2000+xp#280359039718d117
However, when I changed my static IP and Subnet Mask as directed, I
ended up losing access to the Internet and still could not see the
machines on each other.

Can someone help me please?
Thank you.
Charlie

What error messages or other problems do you encounter when trying to share?
Windows XP Professional or Home Edition?

WinXP home. SP2.
I don't get any error messages when I try to share. It's just that I
can not see the other computers in the workgroup. The only error
message that comes up is the one about netsetup.exe not being
compatible with Win2K and only with Win 98, ME and XP.

The name of the workgroup is the same on both machines.
I have turned sharing on and chosen folders to share. One friend said
that I might need to set permissions. Does this sound correct? But if I
can't even see the other computers, there is something else going on is
there not? eg: when I go to Network Neighborhood on the Win2k machine
and click on computers near me, the only one that comes up is the Win2K
machine.

Thanks again.

If you have the Windows XP firewall running on the XP computer disable it,
any other XP firewall or any firewall on the 2K computer should be
uninstalled for testing.

Do the two computers have similar IP addresses? Can you ping from one
computer to the other, and vice-versa?

The only firewalls I have on either are Zone Alarm. I can turn them off
to test and will.
I tried the IP suggestion in the previous thread that I referred to in
my first post, but that broke my internet connection on both so they
are both set to find their own IP and subnet masks...
