I recently installed a full version of XP in an NTFS enviroment. Nothing
went wrong during the install that I am aware of. I just tryed to install
the Fax add-on, but when I do (either from Control Panel or straight from
the CD), I get the error message that 'setup was unable to load the Master
Information File' and then 'application could not initialize'. I had an XP
upgrade before this, and never encountered this error, and my daughter has a
full version on her computer, and she has never had this problem. I'm
wondering, does the Fax problem not work under NTFS? This is the first time
I've run that system, and Fax always worked fine under FAT32, or could there
be another reason I cannot install from 'Additional Windows Components'?

Thanks in advance for any info anybody may have about this.

Steve.

This is happening because your sysoc.inf file has been
removed or lost. It has nothing to do with NTFS or FAT per
se. If you try, you will not be able to install any
optional component if this file is missing, i.e not only
fax.
Look for this file under %windir%\inf.
If it is not present on your machine...try this -
1. In your XP CD, look under -
i386\ for Sysoc.in_.
2. This is the compresses version of sysoc.inf. You can
uncompress it using -
expand sysoc.in_ C:\windows\inf\sysoc.inf
3. Now try installing fax. Things should work fine.
